I’ve been a fan of Gearbox’s Borderlands ever since the first game came out
I can’t tell you how many hours I played; playing with friends, trying to get the best loot, get every achievement. Fast forward a few years later, I’m working at Telltale Games, and I’m told we’ll have Borderlands in Poker Night 2.
I marched into Nick Herman’s office (one of our Directors) and half begged/demanded I be put in charge of everything Borderlands. Right after Christmas, beginning of 2013, I get to work on Claptrap and everything Borderlands in the game. Getting to work with Bombastic cameras, requesting sad “heyo’s” for Steve, creating a “sad cinematic moment” when Steve has to knock out Claptrap, even making an 8 minute idle of Claptrap puttering around the poker space when he’s no longer playing. It was a passion project and I dare not say how many hours I put in over the course of 3 months. Frankly it doesn’t matter, I was having waaaay too much fun to care!
Afterwards, I thought that was it. Game done. I got a chance to be a bit of a fanboy while working, onto the next awesome project! A few months pass, and during a company stand-up meeting, it’s mentioned we’ll be creating a game from the Borderlands universe with Gearbox. Upon hearing the news, I of course was smiling from ear-to-ear. But what I’ll never forget was some of my fellow co-workers smiling and turning to look at my reaction. There was never a question in anyone’s mind if I was going to work on this project or not.
In January of 2014 I got to work in a world that allows us to go over-the-top with awesome cameras, action, humor, you name it! Working as a cinematic artist we’re constantly having to adapt and change our styles depending on the project we’re on. Borderlands cinematically is very different than anything else we’ve worked on in the 4+ years I’ve been here. I absolutely loved it! This was something different, and it was amazing to see how the first episode took shape and became the building blocks for the episodes that followed.
Almost 2 years later, the last episode of Tales From The Borderlands is coming out. I’m a crazy mix of emotions; happy, excited, sad. It’s been a roller-coaster of hard work, passion, time, and study. It was humbling and my honor to work on this project. I got a chance to meet so many fellow fans, sit in on an 800+ person live playthrough of one of our episodes, be Telltale’s walking Borderlands encyclopedia of questionable knowledge, meet and talk with Gearbox’s Chief Creative Champion Mikey Neumann (who also voiced Scooter). There’s just SO MUCH working on this series has gifted me, I’m blown away.
Thank you to the fans. The amazing people who played, who cosplayed, all the awesome artwork. Your passion and love is what pushed us forward, helped us make the series even better! Also thank you to my co-workers, my friends. You put up with my passion, a 6’5 dude jumping around from giddiness couldn’t have been an easy thing to put up with at times! It was amazing to craft so many memorable scenes with all of you; as ideas begat ideas, that led to moments that made these episodes truly unique!
As an artist, you'll sometimes get to work on things that you know will standout for you in your career. Working on Tales From The Borderlands will always be that one for me, and will always hold a special place in my heart.
